Rate of Defective Solar Panels On The Rise

By Ricardo Ehmann, Esq.

Purchasing solar panels is a costly investment that is done to save on long term energy costs and promote a sustainable environment. In order to be cost effective and earth friendly, it is critical that solar panels perform for many years as they are designed to do.  Not surprisingly, solar panel production has expanded significantly over the last several years as the demand for renewable energy has increased worldwide.

One of the main challenges with this type of renewable energy is producing solar panels that are strong enough to withstand the forces of the outdoor environment, such as water, hail, and extreme temperatures.  Recently, studies have shown that the rate of defective solar panels is on the rise.  Specifically, the outer coatings which protect the solar panels from exterior elements have begun to detach or disintegrate in many cases.  Studies have found the solar panel defect rate to be as high as 22%.  While normal solar panels are designed to last for 25 years, recent reports have shown that the protective coating in some defective solar panels have significantly degraded after just one year.

The recent increase in defective solar panels is thought to be linked to cost cutting measures implemented by solar manufacturing firms located mainly in China.  In the global race to reduce costs and increase profits, quality has clearly suffered.  The recent news of widespread increase of defective solar panels is not good news for a multi-billion dollar industry on the verge of widespread adoption – especially in areas of the western United States susceptible to high temperatures, year round sunny weather, and home to residents, companies and other organizations interested in adopting solar energy.
